Five Orange County Schools Nominated for Blue Ribbon Awards
Friday, January 20, 2012

Five Orange County schools were nominated last week for Blue Ribbon awards, the nation's top prize for individual campuses. And the O.C. nominees are:

   1. Fairhaven Elementary School in Orange Unified

   2. Lakeside Middle School in Irvine Unified

   3. Sunny Hills High in Fullerton Joint Union

   4. Manuel Esqueda Elementary School in Santa Ana Unified

   5. McAuliffe Middle School in Los Alamitos Unified.

Thirty-five schools throughout the state received Blue Ribbon nominations. In 2011 four county schools won the award. Next fall the U.S. Department of Education will announce the winners. If a school wins a Blue Ribbon, the school is required to wait three years before applying for the award again.

Considered the Oscars of education, the award may not come with a monetary prize, but does come with a notable status increase and statewide bragging rights. Property values of nearby homes have even been known to increase if a school wins top honors.
